Kinetic Energy?

If someone ever asks you how much kinetic energy your bow has here is how to figure it.
Q: What is kinetic energy?
A: The kinetic energy of an object is the extra energy which it possesses due to its motion. It is defined as the work needed to accelerate a body of a given mass from rest to its current velocity. Having gained this energy during its acceleration, the body maintains this kinetic energy unless its speed changes. Negative work of the same magnitude would be required to return the body to a state of rest from that velocity.

Formula:  ke = M * v2 / 450,240
ke = Kinetic Energy
M = mass (weight of arrow in grains)
v = velocity of arrow in f.p.s.

You will need to know two things, your exact arrow weight in grains and your speed in fps with that arrow from a chronograph. If you don’t have access to a grain scale or a chronograph just visit your local archery pro shop for some help. They might charge a small fee to weigh your arrow and use their chronograph. Once you have those numbers you can figure the ke of your setup.

Examples:

Hunting Setup

  • speed = 287 fps
  • arrow weight = 420 grains
  • 420 * (287*287)/450,240 = 76.84 ft. lbs. ke

Target Setup

  • speed = 285 fps
  • arrow weight = 350 grains
  • 350 * (285*285)/450,240 = 63.14 ft. lbs. ke
